Six livery companies walk into a bar. It sounds like the start of a joke, but it is how the Cask Group began.
The Worshipful Company of Coopers, Innholders, The Worshipful Company of Distillers, Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers of London, Brewers, and The Vintners’ Company share something obvious: our trades are connected. Coopers make the casks. Brewers and Distillers fill them. Vintners sell what is inside. Innholders serve it. Glass Sellers provide what you drink it from.
The CASK Group continues to embody the very best of Livery fellowship—uniting Companies through camaraderie, tradition, sport, and a shared respect for the ancient crafts that helped shape the City of London. As we gather once again for one of our most spirited traditions—the Coopers’ Cask Race—we celebrate not only physical endurance, but the unbroken legacy of craftsmanship, teamwork, and good humour that defines us.
The Coopers’ Cask Race: A Tradition Rolled Through Time
Few events in the Livery calendar generate as much anticipation as the Annual Coopers’ Cask Race. Part athletic contest, part ceremonial spectacle, part glorious chaos, it honours the historic skill of the cooper: the craftsman who built, bound, and rolled the casks that fuelled historic trade across the world.
This year’s race will bring together teams from across the Livery, turning a stretch of London into a lively battleground of precision rolling, controlled speed, and occasionally uncontrolled enthusiasm.
Highlights of the Race
- Impeccable technique from seasoned competitors, proving that rolling a cask is far harder than it looks.
- Creative team uniforms, ranging from traditional liveries to lightly questionable interpretations of barrel-themed couture.
- A fiercely competitive sprint finish, cheered on by supporters who provided… let’s call it motivational encouragement.
- A noble collection of near-misses, dramatic recoveries, and only one cask attempting a break for freedom.
The winning team demonstrating enviable control and technique, finishing with a flourish worthy of the craft it celebrates.
Why the Cask Matters
While the laughter and spectacle make the race memorable, the symbolism runs deeper. For centuries, the cask was a cornerstone of global trade—storing grain, wine, spirits, gunpowder, and goods that powered the City’s prosperity. The cooper’s art represents:
- Precision craftsmanship
- Dependability in trade and transport
- A legacy of industry and ingenuity
- The value of skill passed down through generations
The race honours this heritage in the most Livery-like way possible: with tradition, competition, and a shared toast afterwards.
Fellowship Through the CASK Group
The CASK Group remains a vibrant community within the Livery world, promoting collaboration between Companies whose traditions or trades connect to the cask, the cooper, or the industries that relied upon both.
Our shared purpose is simple: celebrate craftsmanship, champion fellowship, and preserve the stories that shaped our trades—and our City.
