Forging Bonds in Flight and Fellowship: The Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers at RAF Leeming’s 85th Anniversary

In a proud celebration of heritage, innovation, and camaraderie, The Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers was honoured to accept an invitation to the 85th anniversary of RAF Leeming, a cornerstone of the Royal Air Force’s operational excellence. Bustling in the heart of North Yorkshire, RAF Leeming trains, delivers, and supports UK and overseas Expeditionary Air Operations. Its strategic location near Spadeadam, Otterburn, and Catterick makes it the preferred site for deployed exercises and detachments, hosting a range of squadrons and lodger units with broad expertise.

The two-day visit, led by James Armitage, Master Glass Seller, and supported by fellow Freemen and Liverymen, was a resounding success, marked by mutual respect and the forging of new ties between the military and the Livery.

The first evening unfolded with elegance and ceremony. Guests were welcomed by service personnel of the Royal Air Force to a reception that blended tradition, warmth, and the sharing of life stories. Delicious canapés and liquid refreshments set the tone for an evening of conviviality and reflection. An engaging and informative speech by Group Captain John ‘Geordie’ Lawson captured the spirit of RAF Leeming’s legacy and its forward-looking mission. The evening’s grandeur was elevated by the attendance of the Lord Lieutenant representing the king, a military band performance, a guard of honour, and a breath-taking flypast by Hawk and Hunter Trainers that drew admiration from all in attendance as the flag was lowered for The Retreat ceremony over day one.

Day two offered a deeper dive into the station’s cutting-edge operations. A private tour of the airbase revealed RAF Leeming’s commitment to the defence of the UK and the free world, showcasing research-driven innovations aimed at sustainability and energy efficiency. Attendees explored how the Air Force is integrating new technologies into its operations, including advanced avionics and data systems. A highlight was the detailed inspection of a Hawk trainer plane (think Red Arrows), where personnel shared insights into its capabilities and role in modern air defence. The party was particularly interested in a joint operation with the Qatari Air Force and how the RAF is training the future defenders of this part of the Middle East.

Throughout the day, a series of talks enriched the experience. RAF personnel spoke passionately about their work, and the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers presented a compelling session on the path to becoming a Freeman of the Company. This ancient honour, steeped in tradition, offers unique opportunities for professional development, mentorship, and community engagement. The presentation underscored how military personnel could benefit from the Company’s network, values, and support, fostering a bridge between service and civic life.

The visit culminated in a shared sense of purpose and possibility. Positive links were formed between RAF Leeming and the Glass Sellers, with both parties expressing enthusiasm for future collaboration. The Company eagerly anticipates welcoming RAF Leeming representatives to its upcoming Mansion House Banquet, where the bonds of fellowship will be further celebrated.

Straight and true, this visit exemplified the enduring strength of British institutions—military and civic—working together to honour the past, shape the future and keep each one of us safe and free. If you would like any further information on the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers, and how to get involved, please take a look at our website www.glass-seller.co.uk or email clerk@glass-sellers.co.uk
