Members in the News – Honorary Liveryman, Peter Layton

A landmark moment for a master of British studio glass

A Pioneer Recognised on the World Stage

Honorary Liveryman Peter Layton – widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of British studio glass – has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at Collect, the leading international fair for contemporary craft and design.

This inaugural honour celebrates an individual whose artistic vision and influence have helped shape both contemporary craft and the identity of Collect itself.

Five Decades at the Furnace

Peter’s award recognises his exceptional contribution to the field as both a pioneering artist and the founder of London Glassblowing.

Now 88, Peter remains one of the world’s oldest practising glass artists, working daily at the furnace with the same energy, curiosity, and generosity that have defined his entire career. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his Bermondsey Street studio – a creative hub that has stood at the forefront of British glass art for half a century.

Elevating Glass to Fine Art

When Peter began producing studio glass in 1976, the market for the medium was small and largely uncharted. His bold approach to form, colour, and experimentation transformed perceptions of glass, elevating it to a highly collectable and respected art form.

His influence has been profound: nurturing generations of leading UK glassmakers, mentoring rising talent, and building London Glassblowing into one of Europe’s most celebrated glassmaking workshops. The studio is internationally admired for its expressive use of colour and texture, and for cultivating an environment in which artists can explore, collaborate, and innovate.

A Year of Double Milestones

This year’s award marks two significant milestones running in parallel:

Peter Layton’s ongoing artistic vitality, as he continues to produce new work and push artistic boundaries ahead of his 90th birthday in 2027.

The 50th Anniversary of London Glassblowing, celebrating five decades of artistic excellence, creative leadership, and global influence.

Together, they underscore a legacy that continues to shape the landscape of contemporary glass.

In Peter’s Own Words

“I am absolutely delighted to be receiving this lifetime achievement award and to be its first recipient. Gaining recognition for this extraordinary medium has been my mission for the past fifty years and this award is a positive acknowledgement of that endeavour.”

“I dedicate this award to all the talented artists who have worked beside me as part of the London Glassblowing family for the last five decades. I am so proud of them and all we have achieved together.”

A Legacy Still Glowing Bright

As one of Britain’s most influential glass artists, Peter Layton’s impact stretches far beyond his own remarkable body of work. His mentorship, his vision, and his enduring passion have shaped the very foundation of contemporary British glass.

With his studio’s 50th anniversary and this prestigious award, 2026 stands as a fitting tribute to a career – and a legacy – that continues to inspire.
