Demmon Family Honoured at Guildhall as Karen and Lucy Receive the Freedom of the City of London

A distinguished ceremony took place at the Guildhall, London, on Thursday, 5th February, where Mistress, Mrs Karen Demmon and Miss Lucy Demmon were formally admitted to the Freedom of the City of London. The Master Matthew Demmon was in attendance to witness this significant occasion for his family and for the Glass Sellers’ Company.

The Freedom of the City, one of the City of London’s most historic and enduring traditions, was conferred in the presence of family members, representatives of the Company, and friends, marking a moment of considerable pride for all involved.

Mrs Karen Demmon – Freeman

Mrs Karen Demmon began her professional career in the hospitality sector, training and working in several of London’s most distinguished establishments, including The Berkeley and The Savoy. Her expertise and professionalism later led to an invitation to serve the Bahrain Royal Family.

A chance meeting with the future Master, Mr Matthew Demmon, on a flight to The Gambia more than three decades ago marked the beginning of her long association with the glass industry. Since then, Mrs Demmon has played a valued and consistent supporting role across many aspects of the sector, contributing to furnace commissioning, recycling initiatives, and operational work within glass factories. Such is her familiarity with the trade that she became adept at reading the braille identification codes embossed on the bases of glass bottles.

Beyond her professional contributions, Mrs Demmon is known for her passion for ballroom dancing—particularly the quickstep—and for her unwavering dedication to her daughters, Lucy in London and Charlotte in Luxembourg.

Miss Lucy Demmon – Freeman

Miss Lucy Demmon, who has been connected with the Glass Sellers’ Company from a young age, is also an active member of the Guild of Young Freemen. She recently qualified as a solicitor in London, having first completed her studies in International Relations and Politics at the University of Aberdeen, followed by a First-Class degree from The University of Law in Bloomsbury.

Alongside her academic and professional accomplishments, Miss Demmon shares her mother’s enthusiasm for ballroom dancing, with a particular fondness for the foxtrot. She has competed at the regional level within the United Kingdom and now continues to dance for personal enjoyment.

Currently based in London, Miss Demmon has joined the litigation team at Healy’s LLP. She looks forward to maintaining her longstanding connection with the Glass Sellers’ fellowship.

Following the formal proceedings, the party adjourned to L’Escargot in Soho for a celebratory luncheon, bringing to a close a memorable and significant day for the Demmon family and the wider Company.
