The HR Profession celebrates being approved for Worshipful Status by the Court of Aldermen.

The Livery Companies of the City of London remain one of the most distinctive and enduring institutions in British civic life. Rooted in the medieval trade guilds that regulated standards, training, and commerce, today’s Liveries have evolved into charitable, professional, and civic bodies that continue to shape the social and economic fabric of the Square Mile. Far from being relics of the past, they offer a living bridge between tradition and modern professional life.

At their core, the relevance of the Livery Companies today lies in their adaptability. While the ancient companies—such as the Mercers, Grocers, and Goldsmiths—originated in the regulation of specific crafts and trades, their contemporary role focuses on philanthropy, education, professional excellence, and civic engagement. Collectively, the Livery Companies are among the largest contributors to charitable giving in the City of London, more than £80m in 2024, supporting apprenticeships, scholarships, armed forces charities, education initiatives, and social mobility programmes across the UK. This charitable mission gives the Liveries a practical and moral relevance that resonates strongly in modern society.

Civically, the Liveries remain integral to the governance and ceremonial life of the City. Liverymen and women retain the right to vote in the election of the Lord Mayor, Sheriffs, and other City offices, ensuring that the City’s unique democratic traditions continue to function. Ceremonial occasions—such as the Lord Mayor’s Show—are not merely pageantry; they are public expressions of continuity, identity, and civic pride that connect the City’s global financial role with its historic roots.

Equally important is the way the Livery movement has embraced modern professions. The expansion of the order of precedence to include new companies reflects the changing nature of work, commerce, and professional identity. The addition of the Worshipful Company of Human Resource Professionals as the 114th Livery Company is a particularly significant milestone in this evolution.

Human resource management is a profession at the heart of modern organisational life. Issues such as workforce wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, ethical leadership, skills development, and employment law are now central to economic sustainability and social responsibility. By recognising human resource professionals with Livery status, the City of London acknowledges that people management is as vital to contemporary commerce as the traditional crafts and trades once were to medieval markets.

The Worshipful Company of Human Resource Professionals brings a modern, people-focused perspective into the Livery movement. Its presence reinforces the idea that the City’s prosperity depends not only on capital and infrastructure, but also on the ethical, effective, and humane management of talent. Through professional standards, education, mentoring, and charitable activity, the Company aligns closely with the long-standing Livery values of excellence, service, and stewardship—demonstrating that these principles are timeless, even as the professions that embody them change.

Moreover, the inclusion of HR professionals strengthens the relevance of the Livery Companies to younger generations and diverse career paths. It signals that the City of London is not closed or purely historical, but responsive to contemporary realities and future challenges. In doing so, it helps ensure that the Livery movement remains vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking.

In conclusion, the Livery Companies continue to matter because they successfully balance tradition with innovation. They preserve centuries-old civic customs while actively contributing to modern professional life and social good. The addition of the Worshipful Company of Human Resource Professionals as the 114th Livery Company exemplifies this balance, reaffirming the City of London’s ability to honour its past while embracing the professions that will shape its future.
