THE ANNUAL BANQUET 2026 – AN EVENING OF TRADITION, CEREMONY AND FELLOWSHIP

And so, once again, the clock has ticked beyond another year, bringing with it the opportunity to create another memorable chapter in the continuing story of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers of London.

Some occasions are simply dates in the diary; others are moments that deserve a place in our Company’s history. This year’s Annual Banquet was undoubtedly one of the latter.

For an occasion of such distinction, where better to gather than the Mansion House, the magnificent historic residence of the Lady Mayor of London? Standing proudly at the heart of the City, this remarkable building is steeped in tradition, civic pride and centuries of history. Its grand rooms have witnessed generations of distinguished gatherings, celebrations and conversations that have helped shape the life of the City.

Bringing our Company together within these historic walls was both a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our fellowship, our heritage, and our continuing place within the great Livery tradition of the City of London.

The stage was set, the anticipation was building, and the prospect of an exceptional evening lay before us. But, as ever, it is not simply the splendour of the surroundings that makes a banquet memorable; it is the people, the friendships, the shared experiences and the spirit of our Company that bring the occasion to life.

Long before the first guest arrived, the preparations were already well underway. The customary photographs brought together the Master’s guests and those of the Company, capturing the personalities and friendships that would help make the evening so special. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the room was being transformed, with flowers, gifts and all the necessary ceremonial arrangements carefully put in place. Every detail was receiving attention in anticipation of welcoming the members, distinguished guests, and civic party.

And what better way to begin an evening of celebration than with a little sparkle? Guests were welcomed with a reception featuring a particularly generous touch from the Master: sparkling Crémant from Luxembourg, chosen to awaken the palate and set just the right tone for an evening of festivity, friendship and good company.

The trumpeters of the Royal Marines announced the arrival of the Civic Party in suitably stirring fashion. Their arrival was greeted by the Master and Wardens before the distinguished visitors withdrew to the lounge for the customary photographs.

With the formalities completed, the Beadle assembled the Civic Party, the Master and the accompanying procession, ready for their ceremonial entrance into the Egyptian Hall. The trumpets had announced their arrival, but it was now the Master’s chosen tune of the year, The Entertainer, that accompanied their entrance. The assembled company rose to welcome them, with applause filling the room as the procession made its way to the top table. The evening was officially underway.

Following Grace and the presentation to the Cadet of the Year, guests settled down to enjoy the banquet and its accompanying wines. As the evening unfolded, the Company rose once more for the traditional singing of Grace, followed by one of the most cherished customs of Livery fellowship: the passing of the Loving Cup. A ceremony that never loses its charm, it provided a timely reminder that some traditions are best enjoyed when shared.

The formal toasts followed, honouring His Majesty The King, the Royal Family, the Lady Mayor, the Sheriffs and the City of London Corporation. The response from the Lady Mayoress was warmly received, adding another distinguished moment to the proceedings.

The evening then moved to a series of presentations and acknowledgements, recognising the Company’s valued affiliations with HMS Artful and RAF Leeming.

These relationships represent an important part of the Company’s wider connections and continuing support beyond the world of glass.

A particularly meaningful moment followed when the Company honoured its former Clerk, Colonel Audrey Smith. She was presented with her medal and appointed Honorary Clerk Emerita in recognition of her dedicated service to the Company. It was a fitting tribute to the commitment, professionalism and contribution she had given during her time in office, and an opportunity for the assembled company to show its appreciation.

The Prime Warden then formally welcomed the guests, before Adrian Waddingham responded on their behalf. His contribution provided a further opportunity to reflect upon the importance of the occasion and the enduring friendships that make these gatherings so worthwhile.

As the evening drew towards its conclusion, the Master took the opportunity to reflect upon the activities, achievements and principal focus of the year. He thanked everyone who had contributed, supported and participated in the Company’s work, recognising that the success of any year is very much a collective endeavour.

Then came the final ceremonial departure. Led by the Beadle, the Master left the room, followed by the Civic Party and the Company’s distinguished guests, bringing the formal proceedings to a close.

But, of course, an evening such as this does not end simply because the formalities have concluded!

There was still plenty of conversation, laughter and the opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones. Guests departed in wonderfully jovial spirits, carrying with them memories of another splendid Glass Sellers’ evening.

And so, another chapter was added to the Company’s history. An evening of ceremony, fine hospitality and good fellowship played out against the magnificent surroundings of the Mansion House. Above all, it was a celebration of what makes our Livery Company special: its people, its traditions and the friendships that continue to bind us together.
