Princess Royal Challenge Cup at Seaview Yacht Club
17 members of the Glass Sellers joined members of 16 other liveries to compete for the Princess Royal Challenge Cup at Seaview Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight on Saturday 12th September. On the water, our crew comprised Immediate Past Master, James Armitage, Past Master William Knocker, Liveryman Darren Lad and Liveryman Matthew Tottle. Our onshore support team was led by the Master and Mistress Matthew and Karen Demmon, and our Prime Warden David Hinton.
In the morning race, we definitely sailed better than last year and even managed to fly our spinnaker briefly. Unfortunately, we didn’t make the cut to compete in the afternoon heat for the Princess Royal Challenge Cup. However, for the afternoon runner-up race it was quite breezy. We were required to sail reefed and without spinnaker. We started well and led from the second buoy, increasing our lead on each leg, and finishing first with a handsome margin.
The Princess Royal Challenge Cup, which was donated by the Glass Sellers, was won by the Shipwrights to whom it was presented by our Master.
Onshore hospitality was excellent with a lively informal supper on Friday evening and a formal dinner at the Yacht Club on Saturday. Darren and Deborah Lad, Matthew and Karen Tottle and Tony and Elaine Cross rented a luxurious house next to the Yacht Club and generously provided refreshment and relaxation space throughout the day.
A number of livery Companies entered two boats so there is room for more Glass Sellers to compete. All Glass Sellers are most welcome to put their names forward for a place in a boat next year or just come along and enjoy supporting us. We all had a splendid weekend!
